Pink Slime ~ School Lunches ~ School Food

Pink slime has been a part of school lunches and school food since the meat production process was developed in the 1990s.

In fact, in 2012, the USDA had committed to buying more than 100 million pounds of ground beef that contained pink slime, a term that might sound unappealing, but in fact refers to lean ground beef that is safe and nutritious.

School districts have bought pink slime ground beef because it’s inexpensive and less fatty than other types of ground beef.

When parents raised a stink over pink slime ground beef in early 2012, the USDA gave school districts a choice to buy pink slime ground beef or other ground beef products that didn’t contain pink slime.
